GST is the goods and services tax on most sales in Australia.
A business registered for GST collects it on its sales, claims credits for the GST in its business purchases, and reports the difference on its business activity statement (BAS). Allvio Finance records GST as you trade, so the figures behind your BAS are already in the ledger.
A BAS is the form a GST-registered business lodges with the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) to report GST, along with other obligations such as PAYG withholding. The ATO prints the due date on each BAS. You can read its guidance on the ATO’s business activity statements page.
A business must register for GST when its GST turnover reaches $75,000, or $150,000 for a non-profit, and has 21 days to register once that happens, according to the ATO. Once registered, you lodge a BAS. The ATO also notes that business software can make it easier to work out your turnover, which is easier when sales and expenses are recorded as they happen.
GST on sales is recorded when the sale posts from POS, Online Ordering or Reserve. GST on expenses is recorded when you enter the expense in Finance. Both land in the same ledger, so the GST you collected and the GST you paid are in one place.
Finance draws BAS information from the ledger, and the story library shows GST, BAS and profit coming out of the same books. This page covers the records and the figures. For lodging your BAS and for tax advice, speak to your accountant or BAS agent.
When the books are current, the end of a period is a review and not a search for missing entries. These are the checks worth making before you prepare a BAS.
You can give your accountant or bookkeeper scoped, read-only access to Finance. Allvio does not replace an accountant and does not give tax advice. It keeps your operational and bookkeeping records in one place, which gives your accountant less to chase. More on the Finance app.
